Sainsbury's does a range of wine called "House". I've tried 2 now and I have to say I'm really impressed. If you are having a swish dinner party, put this in a decanter and nobody will know what it is.
The thing to remember about supermarket own-brand wine (or supermarket own-brand anything actually) is that supoermarkets buy and sell things; they don't make them. And they certainly don't make wine. So they have gone somewhere and found a wine they are happy to put their name on that they can sell for less than the branded stuff.
- Pinot Noir. This is from Romania and, if you like Pinot Noir, is a pretty good one for the money. Easy to drink, nice colour, looks and tastes like a young Pinot should. It's not a replacement for the really good stuff but it is seriously good for the money.
- Sauvignon Blanc. This is South African and is softer than the ones we normally drink; more like a French than a New World but really worth the money
They are £4.80 - give it a go
